Our Forest School

At St Martin’s Garden Primary School, we believe that some of the best learning happens outdoors. Our Forest School gives children the opportunity to explore, discover and learn from the natural world in our wonderful 8-acre grounds, developing confidence, creativity, resilience and independence through hands-on experiences.

Our Forest School area is a truly magical space, with a log-circle base camp, permanent fire site, bug hotels, den-building areas, climbing ropes and natural spaces to explore. The area was transformed from an overgrown, inaccessible space into a vibrant outdoor learning environment thanks to the incredible support and generosity of the Campus Services Team at the University of Bath, who volunteered their time to clear brambles and ivy, make the trees safe, create paths, build a den and install ropes for children to climb and explore.

Every class has the opportunity to use our Forest School, where children are encouraged to be curious, work collaboratively, solve problems, take managed risks and develop a deeper understanding and respect for nature. These experiences support children’s physical and mental wellbeing while building the skills, confidence and resilience that positively influence their learning both outdoors and in the classroom. We are continually developing our Forest School curriculum to make the most of this incredible hidden space in the heart of Bath and look forward to expanding the opportunities available to our children throughout the year.
