"The playground is fun to play in because it has a football pitch, basketball, climbing frames, apparatus and a quiet area" Year 5 pupil

"It’s great that we have a swimming pool to learn to swim" "Fizzbooks are fantastic to use" Year 3 pupils

St Martin's Garden Primary School occupies a very large and spacious site on the southern edge of the City of Bath. There are large playing fields, large playgrounds and the building itself has long corridors, and light, spacious rooms.

The school’s name was chosen due to its proximity to St Martin’s Hospital.  In the 19th Century this was the city’s work-house, and the school was built on the site of the gardens of the work-house. People who stayed the night at the workhouse had to spend the following morning working in the gardens, as payment, before they were allowed to leave.

The school, as it is now, a primary school, was opened on 1 September 2001, although the building was constructed in 1951.  It was opened at that time as separate Infant and Junior Schools, and in 1973 the Margaret Coates Centre was added to educate children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). In the year 2000 the Governors of the two schools requested that the two schools be amalgamated into a single primary school, which happened on 1st September 2001.  In June 2004 the autistic children moved into a purpose-built Centre, physically linked to the school.  A Sure Start Children's Centre opened in September 2006.

What we've got to offer

The school is proud of its facilities and we are continually making improvements to provide an attractive, safe and comfortable environment for all school users.

Lively photographs and imaginative examples of childrens work are displayed in the reception area and throughout the school.

The classrooms are large, bright and comfortable, and equipped with interactive white boards.

"Fizzbooks" were introduced in September 2011 for all year groups to use.  These amazing, versatile notebook computers are designed to support ICT education for young children and greatly enrich the teaching and learning experience.

Our attractive library was added in 2009 which is well stocked with a wide range of interesting books.

We have two large halls and a separate dining hall, which has recently been refurbished.

Our new dedicated kitchen area opened in September 2011 to support the teaching of food technology and cooking.

We have an extensive and pleasant outdoor environment, with very large playing fields, where we enjoy regular sports activities and events.

Our wide range of play areas include one for infants, which houses the Playpod, a large area for juniors and separate play areas for the Margaret Coates Centre and Children's Centre. Each of the infant classrooms has it's own secure outside play area.

We also have a dedicated conservation area, sensory garden and allotments for both parents and children.

Our newly refurbished swimming pool will be re-opened in the Spring term 2012.
